Missed it in '06
I was just thinking about the whole PB&J thing from last year and how NONE us had it on our lists - anywhere. Oops. I will admit it's lost a bit of its luster with the rampant commercial use - regardless it's still pretty damn good. I was just curios as to what other albums from 2006 you guys either missed or just never got to that would have made your lists? For me, besides PB&J, it was also Fujiya & Miyagi, Transparent Things. I love this album. Such a groovy, head-boppin', smooth-flowin' album. Never heard it until Ankle Injuries hit up on random one day...the rest is history. This leads to the inevitable question: what would the missed picks have bumped? For me: Flaming Lips and either TVOTR or Camera Obscura would have to go.

I think that is a great topic for discussion. Usually there is an album or two that I discover during Burn It or Post-Burn It that would have been somewhere on my list had I discovered them promptly.
For 2006, a couple of the releases I ended up digging later were:
The 1900's - Plume Delivery
The Blow - Paper Television
Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
The Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out
PB&J for sure and probably Amy Winehouse too. I know she's the very definition of overexposed right now but I really enjoyed that album. Not as much as Lily Allen for example but those two would have knocked out Wolfmother and Lupe Fiasco for me.
The Grizzly Bear album was a late comer last year but I did get a few listens in before BI VIII and it did not make the cut. I am surprised about the BLOW album, Oley. I had heard it a bunch in '06 and like it for its off-center quirky pop, but it just didn't get its hooks in me enough to be a top 20. Fujiya Miyagi is a bit stronger for having some great songs, but as an album didn't impress me enough to be top 20.
Each year it seems to get harder to eliminate enough to get down to 20 albums.
and I'll tip my hand a bit here, in contention for the same slot on this year's comp will be:
Yeasayer
Jay-Z
Lupe Fiasco
Talib Kweli
Life Without Buildings
Dizzee Rascal
The Dirty Projectors
all 2007 albums that I did not get until after Christmas and will not be making the cut this year...not that it narrows the field too much though.
I hear ya b - i'm just gettig to really ebjoy Beirut but it may be too late. Yeasayer is quite good - has been on & off my list a couple times.
The only 2006 albums I can think of right now that I missed would be:
Maritime - We, The Vehicles
Midlake - Trials of Van Occupanther
Boris - Pink
