a note on votes

We've not had any thorough discussion of the method this year because it is remaining the same, by and large.  Just rank the top 20 albums of 2007.  Anything released in the calendar year or reviewed for the first time on Pitchforkmedia.com, but discounting any re-release or back catalogue material; it should be a new release.  I suppose the only wrinkle this year comes in the form of EP's.

I cannot recall in any prior year having both albums and EP's from any band that caused concern.  This year though, both Deerhunter and Of Montreal each released both an album and EP that are good enough to make a bit of a stir.  My thought on how to handle this for ranking purposes is that we can go one of two ways.  Either we all agree ahead of time that the items are to be treated as one release or separate releases, or we each rank as we see fit and then use whatever method was most popular.  For example if Deerhunter appears on 4 lists and 3 have combined album/EP for one slot then the points for the fourth persons votes for the two works would be added together.  In the event of an even split then those with the higher ranking would determine method.  Confused?

Again the goal is to have 20-ish songs for a compilation, do we want 2 from the same band?  Doubtful, but we  should be in agreement on how to rank the albums so that we get the choice of songs we want for the comp.

My preference - since I am having a hard time disliking anything the past few days - would be to list the album+ep combo as one. This also potentially applies to Beirut.

I didn't get the Beirut EP just the single that made the PFM top 100, which if we follow form wouldn't qualify for the final comp. But by listing the two together we'd have the option to pull another track from the EP.

I think they should be treated separately. If they both deserve to make it, they should be on there. Heck, the Monkees came out with three albums in 1967 and they all rocked. (If you can name them off the top of your head then I am impressed).

But if someone puts the album and the EP both in their top 20 they damn well better be able to defend it!!

Does Peter Bjorn and John count for 2007 or 2006? Amazon.com lists a 2007 release date.

according to the way we've handled in the past, PBJ does not qualify for this year. the amazon listing is for the US release date. it was released in Sweden & UK in 2006, was widely available on filesharing networks and i think squeaked in at 11 or so on PFM top album list in 06. We just have to admit that we missed it for Burn It purposes, though I will duel with anyone who wants to argue that it is not a great album. Pistols at 20 paces.

So it looks like we will lack unanimity regarding the treatment of EP's. I look at it as though the band could have filled a full 80 min CD but decided to cull songs to keep to the shorter LP format (while I cannot verify the thought process, the actual tracks all add to less than 80 min for Deerhunter Of Montreal and Beirut) . This enhances the experience of listening to either work start to finish, but if forced to vote each item separately, I can tell you we will not be choosing EP songs for the final compilation. This is not some fiat, but just a prediction that the EP's alone wouldn't make the grade after votes are tallied.

More of the Monkees
Headquarters
Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.

according to Wikipedia, all three albums were Billboard Pop Album chart toppers that year. I thought 1967 was supposed to have been a great year for music?

We may want to elminate EPs for eligibility all together (this has been brought up before) although precident was set with the Pinback Offcell EP in 2002 (which still holds up in it's awesomeness). As much as I love the Deerhunter EP, I really don't want to use a spot for it by itself - as Mike said - most of us have somewhere around 100 albums to narrow dowon to 20 here.

The Burn-It list should perhaps separate itself in that it is indeed a 20 best Album (LP) list.

Oley - thanks for finally getting on board here.

Aren't a few Burn Its missing in the sidebar. All should be linked. I actually think the best one is the first. My team had not joined the league at that point.

OK - i fixed the lists to the best of my knowledge. BI III was the mi-year BYO-comp. Let me know if you guys happen to have the dates for BI 4, 5 or 6.

are there any thoughts about how the votes should be submitted? should they be posted on the blog and then tallied at the party? or the traditional email them to me?

seems like an opportunity to mix it up a bit. also, anyone with a wireless enabled laptop should prolly bring it to the event as we'll need screens. I ain't got one...

That's got to be Che Guevara.

I will bring my laptop. I also have access to software that allows for transfer of songs from an Ipod to Itunes.

I saw we post the individual lists to the blog.

should there be a timeframe or order of operations for posting?

We will be losing the element of surprise by posting...

over the weekend I am going to try and post the results from last year as an exercise in linking to an excel file, hopefully the sort/filter functions will flow through to the weblog so each persons votes can be isolated...

Sorry for being late to this. First, I'd like to include LP/EP combo, but no big deal really. Also, I'd like to post my list to the blog, but really prefer the anticipation of finding out the list at Foley's...

I'd prefer to bring our lists to the party for the element of surprise.

Thanks for posting the earlier Burn It lists.

I did not have the file with me over the weekend to attempt to post the excel list of all votes from 2006. But, just from poking around, it seems that it won't work unless I can somehow link to it? Any thoughts?
