in recent discussions about my top 20 i've made no secret of my feelings of ambivalence about this year's offerings. to be sure, i've listened to plenty of good music but I wonder how much of could consider great. i was looking for some perspective and referred back to my file from 2k4, hoping that the distance of four years would reveal some clues. i found that and more.
the thing is, that year we didn't really do a top 20. everyone was given 100 points to allocate and there were a bunch of rules (hmm, trying to think where those might have come from...) regarding the maximum points that could be assigned to an album and how many albums had to receive at least one point, I cannot remember the exact strictures, but the idea wasn't one that stuck, even though clancy would probably approve of revisiting as he said that 10 albums seemed a bit much. in true chicago tradition, he should sell the rights to ranking of 10 albums to an interested party. those things are fucking valuable.
anywho, in 2k4 I ended up with 2 albums to which i only assigned 2 points, and I think that both of them are better than pretty much everything from this year. the albums in question are Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse and Morrissey - You Are the Quarry. there certainly is no guitar based album that sounds as good to me as Sonic Nurse and Morrissey's bag of vocal hooks in that album stand up against any pop/rock formatted stuff from this year. right now i have added both albums to the "party shuffle" playlist that runs almost continually in the front room (now wireless!). midway through sonic nurse and so far so great.

Agreed - 2008 blows. I like my top 10 a lot. Most everything below that is a throw-in.
I agree with Lo - I'll have a solid top 10 but 11-20 will be pretty much a swag. Most guitar-based rock that I enjoyed this year has been metal, which is telling. I need to go back through my past rankings - I bet there will be stuff I ranked in top 10 lists that I don't even listen to now...
I think 2008 is no different than the last 5 years or maybe even last 10 years. My 11-20 have always been weak at best. The real gems from the year always emerge with time and age like a fine wine. Ask me in 10 years what the best albums were in 2008 and I will undoubtly have a larger list than I will on February 7.
Uptown, are you saying that a lame Morrissey album is better than Fleet Foxes? If so, your music cred is seriously in question.
i did say "pretty much everything" from this year. but i did find myself wondering if any of this would even make a top 30 for the decade. that will be a fun exercise next year.
Oley is right that my appreciation for the music from this year will be more fully realized in time. One thing that was disappointingly lacking from this year for me was pretty much any album that I wanted to play over and over again. At the midpoint of 2k7 I was playing the Battles album on a loop and while I can't say I still love it at least it was exciting for a while. This year seemed like a steady diet of thin gruel, keeps you going but never wanted 2nd helpings.
i like the morrisey album.
From my/our 2K4 top 20 - these are the only albums I play with any sort of regularity in order of preference:
Tier 1
(my #15) Air - Talkie Walkie
20. Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
(my #20) Pinback - Summer in Abadon
Tier 2
11. A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder
9. Brian Wilson - SMiLE
Tier 3
1. The Arcade Fire - Funeral
6. The Walkmen - Bows & Arrows
17. Les Savy Fav - Inches
16. Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
