Over the weekend I was informed that my music taste is "eclectic" and not in a good way. Couldn't I play something recognizable, please? Sure, my iPod gets a big workout every week as I churn through the latest and greatest (and some styx too) that pops up in my various playlists. But apparently I've gone off the deep end and can no longer be trusted to play familiar music. So, for my friend John I'd like to collaborate on a mix of music he will know and like. The goal will be to fill a CD-R with mp3 formated files, should be about 100 tracks maybe a bit more. Also, ideally we can avoid repeating bands (though I could be persuaded to include an artist who guested on another's track). John's boat is the most likely place he'll play this mix and a family friendly mix is a must.
I'd like to collaborate on this; put suggestions in comments and as we vet them then I'll add to the master list which I will start with the suggestions:
Artist --- Track
Carole King --- Feel the Earth Move
Christopher Cross --- Sailing
CCR --- Down on the Corner

It's For John

Please provide some information about John so we can make suggestions.
BTW I am very concerned about your Christopher Cross selection. That song is a running joke in my family. Guilty pleasure.
Among the bands that John B likes are Harry Chapin, Marillion, Sarah McLachlan. I think that new music acquisition stopped at least a decade ago.
the sailing song is more appropos given the fact that this cdr will be played on his boat in Wisco.
I don't even know where to begin. Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, ABBA come to mind. I know very little about JB's musical mind, other than I always assumed I did not like it...
I got the impression that he's not picky - just new (post 1995ish) averse. He mentioned Johnny Cash at Folsom adnd the Eagles several times so those are a must. Some others from a scroll through my Ipod: the Police, U2, Pink Floyd, B-52s, Bob Marley, Carpenters, Cheap Trick, Cranberries, Bowie, Doors, Gary Numan, Heart, Hendrix, Kinks, Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, REM, Rush, Squeeze, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Supertramp, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, Van Halen.
Definitely a good start, just need some tracks to go along with the bands listed. I am going to start a playlist on my ipod of these tracks and will add suggestions.
Also, as we go through this I hope there can be some debate and challenges about song choice. And after all is said and done, I like the idea of burying a couple (maybe one track each?) that fits with the general sound of the mix that he would have had no idea of.
Sticking with the nautical theme I want to add Sloop John B by the Beach Boys.
This very much sounds like a mix that could be heard on WXRT circa mid 90s in the middle of a weekday - totally inoffensive, very little interesting
Oley, I understand what you are saying, but maybe we could think of it like a list of songs we are retiring?
I think your collection and knowledge would be useful as there must be some one hit wonders from 60's-80's that John would recognize. The mix needs some of these nuggets to offset the more obvious selections.
Also, this is a common problem when playing for large, diverse audiences; play the least offensive stuff. We even struggle at times to share our own current favs with each other much less with an audience that has stopped pursuing new music. I am not expecting that I will be thrilled to listen to the results on repeat, just that John will.
yes, to any of use this mix would be pretty bland - although i will say i'm a sucker for many of these artists. just think of teh happiness it will bring john adn his family. ok, couple specific tracks:
Police - King of Pain
Gary Numan - Cars
REM - Talk About the Passion
Supertramp - The Logical Song
Bowie - Rebel Rebel
Heart - Crazy On You
U2 - Trip Through Your Wires
Doors - Peace Frog
Squeeze - Pulling Mussels
etc.
