853 and counting, unfinished business.

counting decades from 0-9 has always sat uneasily with me, but i think i have found the silver lining. the 0 year is when i play catch-up. the first quarter of every year i generally remain focused on the previous year's music. beginning with the formation of my top 20 and followed by about 2 months on the stuff i missed. by the time spring rolls around i've accumulated enough new to warrant an auto playlist that gives me the 6 hours of listening i hope to enjoy each day. i am well to that point for 2010 but plan to hold off on paying it any attention.

the oughties or whatever you want to call them, are still unfolding. though that understates it because my listening extends much further back than y2k. bob wills, elvis, the beach boys, motown, the feelies and ice's cube and t. and so it goes.

eventually i will need to start hitting the p4k fest bands and those will necessarily contain new albums. i streamed once through the lcd soundsystem and will get it in a couple weeks when it's released. tallest man on earth earned a best new music and i will need to squeeze that in the next round of emusic downloads. and don't even get me started on pavement...

a few words about 2k9

today i completed my baseline listening for the year; play count greater than 3, date added before 12/24/09. from that i will remove comet gain broken record prayers from consideration as it is a reissue of material from the previous 15 years. it was new to me and i recommend it strongly for anyone who is losing faith in 90's music. that leaves me with 85 albums and ep's for which i have the complete article. now i have to pick 20 and i really don't know much more than that none of the ep's bowled me over enough to merit selection.

if we adhere to the deadline we have used in past years then 2k9 lists are due at noon on friday 5 february. however to whatever extent possible i would like to pull that up a few days or so. if we can get the math done on the composite top 20 before the party then perhaps we can work in advance on narrowing down our selections for the comp. i would rather bang that out and have time for rock band or our own playlists than struggle late into the night as we did last year. that being said, i am prepared to be shouted down in favor of status quo.
